Many of you have been asking how to give donations for the China earthquake. The University of Birmingham Chinese society are sending this appeal to everyone within our reach - please donate to help the Red Cross provide relief and longer term aid. Spread the word - it’s easier to help than you think.

Roads and communication lines have been severely disrupted, and heavy rains are forecast, which will further complicate rescue efforts.

Soon after the earthquake struck, volunteers from the Red Cross Society of China were on the ground distributing emergency relief to the survivors. But as the situation continues to unfold, more help is urgently needed to prevent further loss of life.

People need food, clean water and shelter to help them survive the immediate aftermath of the quake.

The Red Cross is working around the clock to reach those most in need.

The entire committee at Chisoc hope that you had fun at Alton Towers. The trip went extremely smoothly - nobody was left behind, nobody (as far as we know) puked from the dizzy rides, the weather was reasonable, considering the forecast was looking grim. We got to see sun, wind, snow, rain, then sun again; all in the same day!

After this friday’s scary movie night, our next event is a day trip to Alton Towers! It’s at the beginning of Easter. Everyone who needs a relax or interests in it should come and join us!

The Birmingham University Chinese society’s next event is the viewing of a really, really, scary movie. We all know that scary movies are better to watch with other people. Because of the scary nature of this movie and the ability of the Chisoc Scary Sound System^TM to send chills through your spine forcing you into a state of paralysed fear, we recommend you’re over 18 and brave. Others have two choices - stay at home in fear (and miss out on the fun), or bring a cuddly toy/cushion.

Our next event is going to be Ice Skating next wed (20th Feb) at Planet Ice. Don’t worry if you can’t skate - we will have expert skaters from the committee that can help you get started (Billy, Mike, Oscar and Kellie). Skating will be a fun way to get to know the committee, to relieve stress and to laugh at your fellow Chisoc members. At the last event we were kicking ourselves at the fact that we were too busy to really hang out with our members.

Please come along! It’s only £4.20 including skate hire, and £2.85 train ticket to Coventry (with railcard) or £4.30 (without). Please ensure on the day you buy a ticket directly from University to Coventry (if you’re going from University station

Chisoc would like to wish everyone a happy new year! Thank you for your support on the 7th - we hope you enjoyed it as much as we enjoyed organising it! The event was the Birmingham Chinese Society’s first event and a great learning experience, and will only get better from now on. We would like to thank (in no particular order) Hou, Henry, Eddie, Mandy, Brea, Cam, Sally and so many others for their help at the event and preparation. The event could not have happened without you! Really, the society owes you their thanks.

We also would like to give a BIG thank you to the Birmingham University Guild of Students for supplying us with the projector, laptop with no power adaptor, projector screen, tables, a plentiful one single plug socket for 18 rice cookers and consequently 3 broken electrical fuses. POOF! BOOM!
